Too many times, our schools block websites, social networks, and brilliant content rather than emphasize education and appropriate use of these tools. Most of the time, the decision makers don't even know what it is they are banning. They act out of fear.
-Mike Sansone (Is Fear Disabling Our Students' Future?)
We're not focusing on educating students as much as we are on censoring them.
At least in Illinois schools are required to filter their internet connections in order to receive E-Rate funding.
@Jeremy: I believe that's true for districts throughout the United States. There has to be a minimum level of filtering to block pornography and the like. I'm not suggesting we totally remove filters. I'm suggesting the filters block what is required for E-Rate funding (I do agree with this level of filtering), but not much beyond that.
Let's educate our students to use the internet. Right now we're educating them on how scared teachers and administrators are of the internet.
